Supreme Court

The main task of the Supreme Court is to lead the application of law through guiding decisions. The Supreme Court is the final instance for civil cases, criminal cases, and matters that have been decided by the Court of Appeal. In addition to its main task as a precedent-setting court, the Supreme Court also examines cases concerning retrials, judicial errors, and restoration of lost time, as well as matters related to extradition requests from other states and certain cases concerning lawyers.

The court's goal is to be a modern and attractive workplace with a particular focus on meaningful and developing tasks, individually tailored professional development, significant opportunities to influence routines and working methods, and engaging and developing leadership. The court actively works with organizational development, particularly focusing on modern working methods. The goal is for employees to be involved and active in the development work.

Approximately 90 people work at the Supreme Court, of which 16 are judges (justices). The Supreme Court is organized into two adjudicative departments and a secretariat, which consists of two preparation units and an administrative unit that includes a registry office and archives.

Job Responsibilities

The position of judicial secretary at the Supreme Court spans many areas of law, particularly civil law, criminal law, and procedural law. The judicial secretary gains good knowledge of case law, becomes well acquainted with preparatory works and doctrine within the scope of the general courts, and enhances their ability to analyze legal issues.

As a judicial secretary, you are responsible for the preparation and presentation of cases. You present legal investigations and legal assessments of appeals and applications, as well as providing reasoned proposals for solutions. As a judicial secretary, you will have the opportunity to participate in future precedent-setting and work alongside some of Sweden's leading jurists, as well as have interesting, stimulating, and qualified legal tasks.

The work as a judicial secretary provides excellent knowledge of the legal regulatory system and its application, as well as in qualified legal analysis and problem-solving techniques, which together provide good merits for a future judgeship or other qualified legal position.

The vast majority of judicial secretaries work with all types of cases occurring in the court (general cases). However, some judicial secretaries are assigned to work with cases in certain special areas, including intellectual property law and environmental law (special cases).

The Supreme Court also employs preparation lawyers. The role of the judicial secretary is thus refined to largely pertain to precedent cases and other more complicated cases.

Most judicial secretaries work in Stockholm, but there are also opportunities to work remotely from Gothenburg, Lund, or Umeå. This time, we are seeking judicial secretaries with placements in Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Lund. Please indicate in your application which placement you are seeking.

Qualifications

We are looking for candidates with a background as an assessor. Special knowledge, e.g., in intellectual property law or environmental law, may be particularly meritorious. To perform well and thrive in the role of judicial secretary, you need to be a highly skilled and efficient lawyer. It is important that you are structured and have an ability to see the big picture. You should also be self-driven and have a very good ability and willingness to take responsibility. Furthermore, personal maturity and good judgment are required.

To be considered for employment, you must meet high standards regarding judgment, security awareness, and suitability. This means that you uphold democratic values and the state values that govern the operations of the Swedish Courts. We require that you comply with applicable laws. We place great emphasis on your personal qualities.

Other

One or more positions are available.

The employment is time-limited (6 years with the possibility of extension). Start date by agreement. For employment as a judicial secretary, the provisions in sections 26 and 27 of the regulation (1996:377) with instructions for the Supreme Court apply. Attach all certificates from the judicial training and from other completed employment, as well as references from the judicial training to the application.

To ensure an inclusive and fair recruitment process, the Swedish Courts apply competence-based recruitment. Our selection is based on candidates' competencies and merits. We kindly but firmly decline direct contact with staffing and recruitment companies as well as sellers of additional job advertisements.
